BIOGRAPHY
Born in 1988 in Damascus, Hala Aljaafari lives and works in Doha, Qatar. As a painter, she explores the human psyche, particularly delving into the dialogue between humans’ internal and external states. Aiming to depict moments when humans are unable to control or tame their thoughts, Aljaafari’s work resides at the intersection of daydreaming and memories. Aljaafari graduated with a BA in Interior Design from the International University of Science and Technology in Ghabagheb, Syria, in 2012. Her work has been exhibited in Qatar, Syria, Tunisia, UAE, and Turkey.
ARTIST STATEMENT
My work is about connections, linked to human personal stories, principally mine; my encounters are the starting point. I observe faces, voices, tones, language, body movement and human interaction. Personal histories of displacement are my obsession, the fuel that drives my art since leaving Syria, relocating in multiple places, always aware of the fragility of the present, and almost always expecting the subsequent eventual relocation. New people and new stories come with every move; every new face brings a memory, a fable, a narrative, and a subject to my painting. Adapting to a new environment became a skill, along with other skills of reconstructing a new “painting corner” wherever I went. I carry my spatial and temporal memories of displacement with me, those stations of my life where I have evolved, where my visual narrative constantly metamorphosed into the language I speak best: painting.
